6 Ways to Keep your UTV Running in Top Condition
UTVs are so much more than just fun recreational vehicles. UTVs are also more commonly used for work on ranches and farms and other places where a lot of ground needs to be covered practically in a day.
While nothing beats the exhilaration of conquering challenging terrain on your powerful UTV, there’s so much more to these machines than just off-road adventures and thrilling rides. From lawn care to off-road transportation and hauling tools, fencing, and firewood, there really isn’t much that a side by side cannot accomplish. And to keep your rig working in top condition, here’s a list of basic UTV maintenance steps by Revel 42 Golf & Powersports to ensure that neither your work time or playtime are compromised!

Battery Replacement and Maintenance
Battery problems typically crop up in cold weather or when your side by side hasn’t been ridden in a while. A battery left discharged for long will certainly need replacing. Use a battery maintainer to keep it topped off and charged up. Solar chargers are also inexpensive options that can solve this problem. Check the battery posts every other month and keep them clean. If they start getting corroded or have a layer of crust around them, it’s time to replace the battery.
Driveline Service
Every side by side has a driveline that distributes engine power to the wheels. This is a chain or belt, and like any moving parts, requires maintenance and can get stuck if not lubricated occasionally. Check the tension and apply a chain lubricant regularly to keep it moving smoothly.
Regular Oil Change
Oil prevents the engine components from damaging each other and needs to be changed regularly. Inspect your oil for metal shavings, as this indicates that parts are grinding together. Black and sludgy oil is a red flag that you need to change the oil immediately, as the thick fluid wont do a very good job lubricating the engine. It is always a great idea to perform a complete oil change at the start of the season, just to be on the safe side.
Spark Plugs
Spark plugs and wires can often ruin a side by side if neglected for a long time. If your UTV is not running as it should, check if the spark plugs are in good condition. Spark plugs can get snagged, damaged, or pulled out, and a damaged plug indicates an engine problem—usually an issue with the fuel mixture, timing, or the engine running hot. Checking these areas in side by sides is very much a part of the maintenance drill. To take out the plug, disconnect the battery and remove the engine cover, then use a spark plug wrench. Ensure that the metal gaps are clean and dry and that the ceramic casing is still in one piece. If you don’t have the know-how, it is always wise to trust a professional mechanic to take care of any issues.
Wiring
Pay attention to the wiring harnesses that keep your electrical components functioning. With all the bouncing, jarring, and quick acceleration of a UTV ride, wires are prone to shaking loose after a few sessions. Keep duct tape handy to keep the rogue wires in check before they get ripped out of place by a rogue branch.
The Right Fuel for Optimal SxS Performance
Most UTVs run best when using high octane fuel. Ethanol-rich fuels have their own pluses, but can also cause corrosion and buildup in your engine. Use an ethanol-free premium fuel or a fuel stabilizer if you won’t be riding for a while. The right kind of gas can make a world of difference. If you’re using standard gas, make sure to drain your carburetor after each ride and stabilize your fuel when you put your UTV in storage.
