A Quick Guide to Common Scooter Problems and Repair Solutions

They’re not as expensive or as complex as our other vehicles, but they still require regular maintenance. Here’s a quick troubleshooting guide to help you locate and resolve a few common service issues. Batteries

We’ve all been using rechargeable devices long enough to know how to troubleshoot most basic problems. Sometimes older chargers begin to short out or they no longer connect securely into charging ports. If this starts happening you should replace the charger immediately. 

Older batteries sometimes also develop a “memory.” If they’re only taken off their chargers for short periods of time, they will begin to require recharging more frequently. Lithium-ion batteries don’t develop a memory as quickly as nickel-metal hydride batteries, but you can usually expect shorter battery life near the end of their expected operational lifespan.

Motor and Electrical Systems

If you have a flipped ignition fuse, you should be able to flip it back on to get the engine to start. If that doesn’t work, make sure your kill switch isn’t on. A blown fuse is inexpensive to replace, but don’t be afraid to take your scooter in for repairs if you’re not comfortable replacing the fuse yourself. You can often void the manufacturer’s warranty if you attempt to do your own repairs, so review your manual carefully. 

Acceleration, Tires and Brakes

It’s natural for a scooter to slow down on hills and inclines, but if you consistently experience sharply decreased acceleration, it might be time to replace the batteries. Underinflated tires can also lead to decreased power and handling. Be sure to keep your tires aired up to the factory-recommended PSI and check your pressure on a regular basis. You should also inspect your brake cable for damage on a regular basis. 

If your engine begins heating up or if you see sparks, discontinue using your scooter immediately and seek professional repairs. Even if your scooter continues to run, pay attention to any unusual sounds or vibrations that seem irregular. Minor problems can easily turn into major problems if you don’t get them serviced. Most importantly, always know your limitations when it comes to any DIY repairs. Paying for factory authorized service is a good investment that usually saves you money in the long run.
