Just like any other type of vehicle, your golf cart is going to get dirty with regular usage and you’ll need to clean it. However, you’ve probably guessed that cleaning your golf cart is a little more nuanced than running a hose over it and squirting on some car-wash soap. There are some particulars of the process that you’ll want to follow for best results.

Revel 42 Golf Carts & Powersports, with locations in Wilmington and Raleigh, is your North Carolina golf cart dealer. Below, we’ve drawn up a convenient how-to guide for cleaning your golf cart to help make the process as easy as possible.

1. Gather Supplies

Starting out with the right supplies will always help to ensure success. Here are some recommendations for products to use when cleaning your golf cart:

  • A source of fresh water like a garden hose
  • Dish soap or a special golf cart cleaning spray
  • Rubber gloves, if desired
  • Aluminum cleaner
  • A diluted bleach solution or a mold/mildew/stain remover
  • Plastic color restoring formula like Rust-Oleum’s ReCOLOR solution
  • Microfiber towels
  • Paper towels
  • Soft-bristle brush
  • Plastic shine or polish

2. Remove Belongings

Next, you’ll want to remove everything you regularly keep on your golf cart to prevent it from being damaged and to make the cleaning process easier. This includes personal items stored in the dashboard as well as golf clubs, balls, water bottles and safety gear. Take out any trash as well.

Park your golf cart on an area with good drainage like a concrete or gravel driveway, rather than on your lawn. The soap and other chemicals used in cleaning can damage your grass otherwise. If there is a lot of mud on your tires or the undercarriage of your golf cart, now is the time to use a hose to spray as much of that off as possible before you begin wiping down the rest of the cart.

3. Wipe Down Plastic

Mix dish soap in some clean water in a bucket and dip a microfiber towel into this. Wipe down all the plastic on your golf cart, including the sides of seats, cup holders and dashboard. Don’t use this on the windshield as this requires a glass spray to clean it. If you prefer, a spray-on cleaner for plastic can also be used; spray it on the cloth or the plastic and wipe it down.

4. Rinse Off

Take a wet clean rag and wipe down all the plastic. If you prefer, you can try to use a hose to spray down your cart, but this can get water into the electronics on your dashboard if you’re not careful, so use your best judgement. Apply a polish or color restorer to your plastic to get it to really shine.

5. Clean Aluminum

Aluminum parts on your cart will take some special care. An aluminum cleaner and restorer that you spray on or apply with a sponge will clean up aluminum and get it shiny again. Rinse off the cleaner and apply an aluminum polish if you like.

6. Remove Mold & Mildew

The vinyl seats on your golf cart may grow mold or mildew over time. This can seem impossible to clean, but a solution of one part bleach to two parts water applied to a sponge will generally take care of the problem. Rinse off with a clean wet rag afterwards. You can also use a special mold/mildew/stain remover that sprays on if you don’t want to use bleach.

7. Disinfect

To reduce the spread of bacteria and germs, you can use disinfecting wipes on high-touch surfaces on your golf cart like the handles, grab bars and steering wheel. Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in your cart for you and your passengers to use.
